ARKTIKA: an astonishing example of symbiosis between man and nature.
Gilles Elkaim completed a mad bet between May 2000 and April 2004: cross from the Northern Cape to the Barring straits over thousands of kilometres of the Siberian Arctic on his own by kayak and dog-sleigh.
He had no margin for error when the temperature fell to -55°C, when a blizzard blew or when hungry bears growled. He had to rely on his own resources and reliable and resistant equipment. Hunting was an essential activity during the four years of his expedition.
Gilles Elkaim was equipped with a Verney-Carron Sagittaire mixte that performed perfectly despite the pitiless conditions at the Pole.
The history of this great human adventure is published by Robert Laffont: «Arktika. Quatre ans d’odyssée sur la banquise»
